York county hosts “Operation Medicine Drop”

Operation Medicine Drop

There’s a party going on in the family medicine cabinet. Unsuspecting parents/grandparents are the host. The guest list is their teenager and their friends. Welcome to the “pharm party” — a dangerous new trend that experts warn is growing fast among suburban teens and is helping to turn prescription medication into the No. 1 gateway drug.

Operation Medicine Drop, a day of amnesty to dispose of unused, unwanted and expired medications in the home, has been scheduled for December 12, 2009; from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

“Operation Medicine Drop” will give York County residents the opportunity to rid their homes and medicine cabinets of unused, unwanted and expired medicine.

The program will allow York County residents to deliver all of their unused, unwanted or expired medications to law enforcement officials, who can in-turn dispose of these controlled substances in a safe and non-hazardous manner. Currently, more than 70% of people who abuse prescription painkillers say they get them from family or friends, often in the home or right out of medicine cabinets.

This initiative will be held in partnership with several law enforcement and substance abuse prevention organizations.
